70 years old, never had a flu shot, only had the flu once while visiting a doctor to get the only check up I had in the past 30 years. Went back for results, got a throat infection for 3 months. Next time I go to the doctor will be when I’m dead
As a Korean physician, I Suggests new treatments for coronavirus infection.
In many tropical and subtropical countries, (where income and hygiene are scarce and medical conditions are poor)
the corona virus is not wide spreading. I think it’s because the corona virus is weak in heat and humidity.
Therefore, I believe that treating a patient in such a hot and humid environment (as in winter clothes and in a hot bath)
would be very useful in terms of cost and efficiency than ruling antiviral drugs.
Please leave a reply if you’ve been vaccinated, but still came down with the flu. I have many friends, that have been very ill from the flu these last two months, and they received a flu shot. I’m just curious as to the number of people vaccinated and that still came down with the flu. Thank you for helping me with this project.
In a country that could have 25 million infected and 250,000 that want to go to hospitals, you throw everything at the virus, and if something appears to work, that that at 10,000 in a city and see if the hospitalization rate collapses. Worry about cute blind studies later when you have the time. Population studies will work for now.

Hi I am an English man retired 72 years old and live in Jakarta Indonesia. I have lived and worked here for 17 years and have travelled around a lot so seen much of what Indonesia has infrastructure wise.
I have been following the illness for some weeks and have got a little prepared in respect to sanitisation of my house and my wife’s business as well as doing the basics of hand washing and refrain from shaking hands and kiss greetings.
Many Chinese Indonesians usually go to China for their new year.
I have been waiting for the illness to hit here and to-date it doesn’t appear to have happened.
Indonesia’s major population generally mass in markets to buy food but do not generally have air-conditioning so are in temperatures of low to high 30’s. this is different from Singapore and Malaysia who have more air-conditioning in normal daily living.
The grape vine here would have shown if mass cases have occurred but that doesn’t appear to be the case, local hospitals appear not to have cases not are they being over run.
I am hoping that maybe that the higher temperatures here is an inhibit the virus spread particularly when you look at the cases that have occurred world wide.

I had a heathy, young mother die last week of influenza a last week so that you for bringing up the importance of vaccinations.
My dad had influenza and was on Tamiflu and he was transferred to a separate room in the hospital.
I thank God we have the NHS in the UK…. they treated my dad exceptionally well and within 9 days he was back on his feet!

I’m impressed the actions taken by health authorities here in the Philippines. They have been tracking everyone that comes into the country, have sent all resorts and hotels lists of possible infected people that have come into the country to urgently track them down so they can be tested. Everyone is screened coming in. Information posters are up everywhere. hand sanitization stations are outside of all major stores.
Lots of information is being broadcast of the news networks, also via local radio stations.
Workers at sewage treatment plants are at elevated risk. Water droplets in the air above splashing sewage water is quite common at open air sewage treatment plants. Semi-treated sewage water is sprayed on beds of small stones to promote bacterial digestion of sewage particulates remaining in the water. I would not want to live downwind.

With NEJM change in info on the Germany case. Where is there evidence of this virus passing from one person to another without symptoms. Also you said you are in Hawaii, well two Japanese tourist were in Maui for a period of time and when they returned to Japan they were positive for the virus. Be careful and keep up the great work.
Does this coronavirus affect other mammals? If so, if it gets out into the countryside, that could be the collapse of wildlife globally.

It appears that Sars-cov2/Covid-19 causes only mild symptoms in infants. infants are known to have underdeveloped immune systems. It makes me think that the virus causes the most damage by causing a severe allergic reaction in adults, often leading to organ failure.
It appears that steroids and antiinflammatories would be of benefit.

i do not agree the trials would be in vain if they actually work the problem is if they do not work. For then one needs further analysis and there a standard approach is essential.

This virus seems on average to last 2 weeks after it has developed. So to apply Mr Spock logic, 2 weeks ago we had approx 8000 (approx) confirmed cases world wide, today we have 11,147 confirmed recovered!

to be clear, this virus would we need to have eye protection on plus mask and gloves if coming in contact with a patient that might have this virus. I used to be a medic but now no longer in the medical field but a part of an emergency response team.
Thinking about this new plasma-based treatment, my concerns are 1) In a country that harvests organs from Falun Gong members, are the plasma ‘donors’ voluntary? 2) If it is an effective treatment, will any of this plasma go to ordinary folks?

We, (my son, wife and I) all got a nasty case of the flu a couple weeks ago in spite of getting our flu shots. My parents also got it a couple weeks before we did flying back to Seattle after visiting us and they also got their flu shots as well, for them it was even worse than for us but fortunately they recovered after a couple weeks. So maybe the flu is bad this year because the shots weren’t so effective and not because people didn’t get them?

Using convalescent plasma is a dangerous road to go down. FWIW I had H1N1 in 2009 due to travelling for work in MX. I was young & healthy yet was hospitalized with ARDS. I’ve never gotten the flu since then, and was recently contacted to take part of some study bc apparently H1N1 survivors gain a superior level of immunity that seems broadly effective across influenza strains. The patient stipend is quite a bit of money but the scheduling would be hard for me. I do encourage others to participate in those studies if they’re able
Considering that this virus seems to be spreading well in the hot 80F degree weather in Singapore, I’m sceptical that the end of winter will rescue us. It will make it easier for us to identify infected at local hospitals, as the background noise of typical flu season is likely to provide cover for SARS COV 2 infection. Let’s hope we start enhanced screening and precautions with all flu cases once cold & flu season ends.

Doc, let us imagine that someone has symtoms of flu/corona virus, they are hundreds of miles away from a hospital or treatment centre. is there a position a patient can be put in so that they can self drain any fluieds in the lungs, and also allowing maximum oxegen reaching the lungs.
I’m a 40 female in SoCal and I tested positive for influenza A and ended up in hospital on day 3 of illness with SOB and irregular EKG for 2 nights with sever dehydration, then quarentined for 10 days from my family with the food dropped off at door but noone else got it at my house, but every cough at works 100+ cubicals keeps me in a face mask lol but not funny

Well if YOU or your family or patients had COVID-19 are you saying you would prefer they be placed in blinded, randomizes controlled studies so half of them have the opportunity to develop pneumonia/organ failure/death Whaaaat This is a global health EMERGENCY/PANDEMIC, China does not have the LUXURY of randomizes trials!! Besides cloraquine has been around for 100 years!!! Put it in the WATER on the Diamond Princess! Withholding anything SAFE is tantamount to manslaughter.
Whether it was a natural virus or re-engineered, the dangers of this virus are many: it has many ways of transmission that other disease like the flu or Ebola doesn’t have. It has asymptomatic transmission so people can infect others unknowingly, making it widespread quickly. It lives on surfaces for up to 9 days. It can affect only the digestive tract or heart so patients get examined for digestive and cardiac issues, and end up infecting everybody in those departments. It doesn’t create immunity after infection, and the second time can be worse and kill you. It has 20x the lethal rate as the flu. It causes only the cold and flu symptoms in some people so they unknowingly infect others. It can be asymptomatic in some people but attack their heart and cause them to drop dead. The lack of symptoms proliferates it’s spread, because people with a cold or flu won’t usually see a doctor or get tested. There aren’t enough tests to go around as it spreads. It isn’t easily detectable in one test, so requires multiple tests for patients who are suspected of it and for those who recover. Chinese patients are being tested FOUR times after they recover, before being released. We may all just have to live with this, and accept that it may kill some of us.

I work in drug development and I think a very good video you could do would expand your coverage of “in vitro” versus “in vivo” medications in drug development so people understand what holds up drug development; ie, the idea that the Ebola drug kills Ebola but not in Vivo, and how that impacts this process. Keep up the good work!
I would like to know where are the statistics for people who were vaccinated vs the ones not vaccinated! I guess talking about blind studies to be done is cool but we already have two populations available to study those vaccinated vs not.

The WHO and specifically Soumya Swaminathan are wrong. The Chinese are not starting clinical trials; merely trying to save lives. The Chinese text clearly states that their clinicians are simply trying therapies in groups to see what comes up with the best results and that regulated clinical trials would begin as the Covid-19 abates. They also have very exacting definition of recovery. Can you imagine what would happen if 70,000 + patients stormed the hospital is of Southern California where you practice? The United States would completely fail. No privatized healthcare system can come close to handling the volume.
Those complicated viral pneumonia cases need to also be tested for covid19 – and this has not been done yet.
I think it is strange you are asking folks to get the influenza vaccine now when we are being told it is only 20% effective.

My parents, who are in their 70s and in Fla., got flu A this month – even though they both had gotten the quadravailent shots. Meanwhile in NH, my family came down with flu b, even though we all got shots. The flu vaccines were CRAP this year. Are they intentional trying to weaken the US populace, so when Covid-19 gets here, we all kick the bucket? WTF!
What about the funeral homes that are reporting 60% of the deceased are coming from home, they have not been to hospital, therefore have not been tested, and are not counted towards the death toll. Can we really trust communist China to give us an accurate death toll? Is it possible that the death toll is 60% higher than reported?
