Ontario is lagging behind? How far are they behind? Because testing in other provinces mentioned are not good at all. I understand that it is challenging to test everyone and that testing supplies are low, but we are, as a whole, doing far too little testing. We cannot take proper measures if we don’t try to get as close as possible to the true number of cases. The only way to do that is to test as many as possible starting with essential service workers (other than health care providers) such as drivers, grocery store, and bank employees, etc. so we are not sending contaminated employees to work to further spread the virus in the communities. I know health care employees need to be tested the most because they are on the front line of this crisis. But from a protective and preventative stand point, testing should extend beyond those who are exhibiting serious symptoms and health care providers. I really hope the government has a plan in place to produce more testing kits and implement safe procedures to test as many as possible. I am also dumbfounded that returning Canadian where not tested upon arrival to Canada and were not given strict instructions to quarantine. Despite all my criticism above, I have to add that I am impressed with how Trudeau is handling the crisis. Also, I really hope that Bonnie continues to stick to just giving facts and numbers. She has offered advice and opinions about work and school in the past that made me cringe. Also, it is very important to educate people about how pandemics generally work in terms of waves, peaks and exponential growth so that they know what to expect and are not left in the dark. The human brain does not like uncertainty. Lastly, I would like to express my gratitude to all those who are putting themselves at risk to serve their communities… that includes my brother.

Here’s your answer re PPE: Trudeau gave away 32 tonnes of PPE to China in January. They are working on getting PPE to hospitals. Why beat that horse for 90% of Canadian news casts? We don’t have any and they’re trying to get them in; and contracted businesses to make them. Once again: we have no PPE in Canada and our government is working on getting them. What else do you want them to say? Start asking more constructive questions that affect Canadians.
I wish the public is able to buy those made-in-Canada medical supplies, particularly medical masks, and I hope those masks are just as affordable as the made-in-China ones (made-in-China ones already aren’t so affordable due to supply-demand issue).
It confuses me why Canada won’t import those supplies from China though, they have a surplus of those as the outbreak is leaving China. Producing those in Canada create additional risk for infection for those factory workers.

To bring manufacturing back to Canada should not be a « Canada only » thinking. The best reason, intent and focus should be to localize manufacturing to establish « self-reliance ». This should be nationally and all the way down to locally. This means when there is self-reliance in a Province, that Province can sustain itself when other Provinces are heavily impacted by the pandemic. This way, a Province can sustain its needs without falling into a dependency on external providers. This absence of self-reliance is the exact reason why store shelves are bare.
The self-reliance model can also be established per geographical area (cities, towns etc), further establishing self-reliance on smaller scale, thereby reducing the overall demands.
Again, this is not an isolationist mentality, it is a self-proficiency direction.
It is the bottom-dollar business models that caused our cities and Provinces to become dependent on International manufacturers, and the impact of that dependency is clearly shown by this pandemic.
Lastly, Self-Reliance is not removing International trade, what it does is change how we do it.

Now that the shock is dissipating, Trudeau is sounding more like a robot again every day. This does not fill me with confidence. I’m also curious what has happened to support of people working in ‘gig’ economy like artists, musicians, artisans, etc. It seems like they have been all but dropped and don’t get any income support all of a sudden, and it’s only people who work for established companies that can expect assistance now. Also this crisis is really hammering home the need for UBI/GBI (universal basic income/guaranteed basic income) like nothing else before. We need to move to this model, NOW.
