This is factually wrong. For example, UK productivity grows by about 1% a year. USA productivity grows faster – (that’s why US GDP per person is higher than UK GDP per person). If we picked many poor and middle income countries, we;d find that rates of productivity growth would be higher.

The one thing I have issues with in what he’s talked about in the entirety of the video was the benevolence of the belt and road initiative. Unfortunately, in many cases, it’s been used to the effect of debt dimplomacy where China uses debts incurred by the economies hosting the construction to take control of land or other assets. This happens by way of them initially promising the construction as a boon for the locals with employment, tourism, and/or functionality, however the works ends up contracted out to chinese companies who use Chinese steel and Chinese equipment to build admittedly amazing feats of engineering in record time. Then bills come due and those who can’t pay must forfeit assets to the Chinese.

YES, the cost of producing solar power is rapidly declining:BUT It still costs $50 to produce one megawatt-hour of solar power in an average home….not a few cents as you indicate Mr Rifkin….!
Hydroelectric power is STILL the cheapest source of renewable energy, at an average of $0.05 per kilowatt PER hour (kWh).
There are considerable disadvantages with SOLAR + WIND energy, here are some:
1. THE Cost. The initial cost of purchasing a solar system is fairly high….
2. THE Weather Dependent. Although solar energy can still be collected during cloudy and rainy days, the efficiency of the solar system drops….
3. THE Solar Energy Storage Is Expensive….
4. IT Uses a Lot of Space….
5. IT is Associated with Pollution. solar panels only last about 20 years, there will be a lot of waste of these panels, breaking down into lead, cadmium and chromium. Where is the waste going to GO?
6. The wildlife damage by wind and solar farms. There is the relocation of species that needs to take place when the land is cleared for these SOLAR +WIND farms. Wind turbines kill more bird life than any type of renewable energy,, such as bats, eagles, condors, and other species by colliding with the turbines, and by frying when they touch the solar farm panels….
The zero marginal cost has not yet happen, YET you talk, Mr Rifkin as it is now HAPPENING….I love your vision of the future, but scaring the kiddies, and blind-siding them with obscure facts won’t cut it…!
Also….The typical solar payback period in the U.S. is between close to 8 years. If your cost of installing solar is $20,000 and your system is going to save you $2,500 a year on foregone energy bills, your solar panel payback or “break-even point” will be IN 8 years time on average….the same is for SMEs!

Productivity gains would be much bigger except for most advanced countries have borrowed and spent so much that governments have to stifle growth in trying to manage and deleverage their massive debts with higher taxes, printing money with inflation, etc. Over spending and massive debt levels, not productivity gains is the current problem. Current workers are massively productive. Society now expects free college education and free healthcare, and robust welfare plans. Sadly we have many not on welfare and receiving government support and aid due to misfortune out of their control, but so many that feel living on others contributions is fine even when they are capable of supporting themselves.
